LNP to boost meningococcal vaccination program

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington today committed to making changes to Queensland’s meningococcal vaccination program to protect young Queenslanders from the deadly disease.

Ms Frecklington attended Meningococcal Australia’s Inaugural #goforzo Lunch in Brisbane to raise funds for meningococcal awareness and to remember 20-year old Zoe McGinty who tragically passed away from a deadly strain of the disease last year.

“It’s totally unacceptable that the number of people contracting this terrible disease is increasing every year in Australia,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Sadly here in Queensland, the number of notifiable cases has more than doubled in the last five years, with 30 cases already reported in 2018.*

“It’s clear more needs to be done, which is why other states are boosting their immunisation programs.

“The Palaszczuk Government has a responsibility to step up and increase funding to prevent more people contracting this deadly disease as well.

“If elected the LNP would introduce a targeted Meningococcal B vaccination program and investigate extending the ACWY programs further.

“We urge Annastacia Palaszczuk to adopt a bi-partisan approach to this issue and fast-track this important initiative before the next state election.

“Queenslanders shouldn’t have to wait another two years for more action on this deadly disease.”
