Labor fails women’s AFL again

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said this week’s State Budget revealed Labor had once again neglected women’s sport by providing no money for the Brisbane Lions Women’s team.

“Labor are all talk and no action when it comes to supporting our elite female athletes and encouraging more women to have a healthy and active lifestyle,” Ms Frecklington said.

“During the election campaign we promised to provide a $15 million boost to women’s sports in Queensland.

“It’s time for Labor to match the LNP’s commitment to providing a new home for these amazing women athletes.

“Labor needs to stop talking and stump up the money to support women’s sport in Queensland.”

LNP Shadow Minister for Sport John-Paul Langbroek said funding was needed to provide a new ground for the AFLW team at Springfield, with both the AFL and Ipswich City Council already on board.

“We support a fair go for women athletes, but this project would also deliver infrastructure to boost grassroots sport and create long-term jobs,” Mr Langbroek said.

“Queensland sports fans deserve better than Sport Minister de Brenni, who can’t even get the basics right.

“This is another fail from Labor for women’s sport.”
