Hervey Bay road upgrade paralysed by Palaszczuk

The Palaszczuk Labor Government is refusing to fund the Torbanlea Pialba Road upgrade in Hervey Bay despite Canberra putting 80 per cent of the funding on the table, the LNP said today.

LNP Shadow Infrastructure Minister Andrew Powell said transport planning documents showed Labor had failed to commit a single dollar to the flood-proofing project in its latest Budget (see below).

The Federal Government has already committed $24m to Torbanlea Pialba Road – meaning Annastacia Palaszczuk has to contribute just $6m for work to begin.

Budget documents also show that Labor’s road budget for Wide Bay this year will be $43m less than under the last LNP Government.

“The neglect of this community by Annastacia Palaszczuk is staggering,” Mr Powell said.

“Labor are pouring $15bn into the Cross River Rail project in Brisbane but they won’t give $6m to flood-proof one of the Hervey Bay’s most important roads.

“Labor have gutted the roads budget in this region, despite the fact that thousands more people are using the roads because of population growth.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk and Labor don’t give a damn about the regions.”

Member for Hervey Bay Ted Sorensen said the road was a vital link to Hervey Bay when flooding occurs and his electorate was being ripped off by Labor.

“Hervey Bay is paying more tax to the Treasury than ever before, but we’re getting less and less,” Mr Sorensen said.

“Our taxes are paying for Jackie Trad to build a rail tunnel in her own backyard when they should be used to fix local roads.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk needs to find the money for Torbanlea Pialba Road and find it fast.”
