Gold Coast youth unemployment rises as cuts kick in

New figures have revealed a jump in youth unemployment on the Gold Coast just one week after Annastacia Palaszczuk axed a key jobs program in the region.

ABS statistics showed youth unemployment climbed from 8.3 per cent to 8.4 per cent on the Gold Coast in May.

“Labor has no plan for the economy and young people on the Gold Coast are paying the price,” LNP Shadow Treasurer and Deputy Leader Tim Mander said.

Mr Mander said it was staggering that employers on the Gold Coast would be excluded from applying for Back to Work SEQ grants from July 1.

The Back to Work program offers grants of up to $20,000 to employers who hire eligible jobseekers.

“The Back to Work program is being kept in Labor heartlands like Ipswich but is being axed on the Gold Coast,” Mr Mander said.

“Unlike Labor, I think young people should get the same support regardless of where they live.”
