Choosing Queensland seafood at Easter will be a whole lot easier if Deb Frecklington is elected Premier in 2020 due to the LNP’s seafood labelling policy, which empowers consumers and supports local businesses.
LNP Deputy Leader Tim Mander said seafood was a popular choice for families over Easter but consumers were often in the dark about where produce originated.
“We are blessed with glorious seafood in Queensland and an Easter spread wouldn’t be the same without Mooloolaba king prawns or Moreton Bay bugs,” Mr Mander said.
“Buying Queensland seafood this Easter is a win-win for consumers and local business.
“Queensland fishers deliver terrific catches up and down the coast. Our labelling policy will make it crystal clear where seafood originated, from ship to store.
“Any business selling seafood for immediate consumption will have to identify where it came from under the LNP’s policy.
“Our policy will support Queensland’s seafood and fishing industries and give consumers greater choice.”
Shadow Minister for Fisheries Tony Perrett said the LNP, if elected in 2020, would change legislation in Queensland so any business selling seafood for immediate consumption must identify where the product originated.
“A staggering 30 million kilograms of seafood was imported into Queensland during 2017-18 and businesses currently don’t have to label where it came from,” Mr Perrett said.
“Small businesses will be able to use our policy as a marketing tool to promote Queensland seafood while consumers will have a clear choice to support local produce.
“All we need to do is change the Food Labelling Act 2006 so our seafood labelling policy won’t cost taxpayers a cent.
“Northern Territory has had the policy in place for over a decade, with tremendous success.
“Think local, buy local and put Queensland seafood first this Easter.”
